Do I just suck or is pattern three impossibly fast for a beginner? I've been playing for a year or so and need some techniques for improving my doublestroke speed. Can someone who has transitioned from beginner to doublestroke wiz tell me, is this a good excercise?

Thanks for the great warm up video! I also had some trouble with part #3 but I slowed it down and practiced it for awhile. I can't quite do it at 100 bpm but I think it's good to keep practicing that one as well. The first time I did the warmup it took me about an hour

Can you do the doubles with your right hand? If so you just need to focus and practice with your left to develop the same technique. Practice your left just making one wrist motion but with two hits. It all about grip, finger control and practice. -------------------- . I'm not unemployed. I'm a consultant. |

Hi Jared and all!
Anyway, I am learning at a pretty good pace and having so much fun. I too am having problems with the #3 warm-up where you transition from single strokes to double strokes at 30 second notes. So I tried a few differen things to try and fast at it. I've been playing around with "bouncing" the sticks on the drum you know letting them do all the work and being loose in the wrist type thing. I noticed the stick will hit twice but your hand is actually only doing one stroke! Is this the key at getting this technique down? Also, I have slowed the tempo down to 60bpm as I want to learn this slower first but I am also having a hard time with transitioning from counting the 16th notes to the then 30 second notes as here you only count every second hit. I guess my main question then is on this 30 second double stroke roll is whether you are actually stroking your hand twice to get this effect or are you simply letting the stick hit twice while actually stroking only once?? Thanks Miss Noir |

Hey! Welcome to the forum!
There's actually both techniques: "wristing it out" double and the "rebound" double. With one you actually do both strokes with two movements on your wrist (or fingers, depending on the grip you're practicing), and with the other you control the rebound of the drumstick to get both hits with a single wrist movement. It's important to practice both, but IMO, it's of greater importance to get the rebound stoke right before anything else. It gives you much greater stick control to work around all the other stuff you do (like paraddidles). And it's also great to show off If you have any other doubts/questions, feel free to ask around! Good luck on your practicing! Stick around! |

A friend showed me a very easy but also a pretty effective lesson.
Just start the exercise with a single! so you got, if you'r right handed "right - left - left- right - right - left - left" and put at a SLOW time the bass or the HiHat at 1, 2, 3 and 4 while counting "1 and 2 and 3 and 4 and" get a feelin' for that stuff and practice the normal double strokes 2! then the change from singles to doubles is easier. I mean, when you get the stuff at a faster speed ;=) Try it and you will see... It helped me alot! Once again sorry for my bad english! nice greetz from germany/bavaria Jay [Edited for language.
