I just wondered what the little drum was that seemed to sit behind the Bass Drum, or am i seeing things? Anyone care to explain? -------------------- Ninja can't catch you if you're on fire.

It looks like a SubKick. Basically a large diaphram microphone used to mic the low end of a bass drum. This post has been edited by Poco Askew: Aug 15 2008, 07:30 AM -------------------- . I believe you can special order the sub kick to match the color of your kit. Either that or he got lucky and found the right match! -------------------- Are you standing close to the edge? Buying a Subkick is like buying any other microphone.

Buying a Subkick is like buying any other microphone. ...except the SubKick uses a 6-1/2" woofer as the microphone. It is extremely large and heavy (slow) compared to other microphone diaphrams. Combined with the birch/mahogany drum-style shell, the SubKick will only pick up the extreme low end of the kick drum. I've never used one but I wonder if it can even pick up the attack of the beater or do you need to mic for that separately? Two mic's just for the kick?? -------------------- . I'm not unemployed. From what I've heard, the Subkick also picks up a great deal of attack, and you can do only with the subkick. In an ideal (utopic) situation, I'd mic my kick with 2 mics, one for tone and one for attack.

That's Mike's subkick he got from Yamaha. I am pretty sure they don't do custom colors (not 100%) so he actually got it custom painted from a friend of his. When we record with him, we use that along side of a regular Beta 52. The subkick on its own can be a little much so it's best if it's mixed in. Yah, but all that's in the subkick is a Yamaha NS-10 Speaker cone to catch a larger diaphragm of sound.

Speaking of bossa...
We made a cover of Chick Korea's "Spain", and in the solo bit, the guys told me to freestyle bossa while keeping the same tempo. 5 minutes later, I had (besides a massive leg cramp) discovered a great exercise for single-bass doubles. |
