How about doing some lessons on the Cascara? That is a great pattern that I just can't get figured out.

I've never heard of that before, aha. Does someone have a link to a sample beat?

All I got on that is Mike Michalkow's Latin Drumming System...He goes into it in pretty good detail. I'll look around for some free stuff as well.

Samba anyone????

Any sugestions for some tracks I can listen to...Im just getting into these grooves... I must be doin something right though cos Im getting them with little effort...I have been playin for years...and My reading the drum tabs and music from this site is great.. but I have never played these rhythms in a live situation before...the playalongs are good....but I still wanna dive in with both feet...no pun intended... the fills that are used by mike are cool but I wanna go to the source...and make my own latin groove with my own feel... But I need to know what NOT to do as well as what I can play.

Can anyone recommend some recordings that feature this beat or this style of drumming?

Aw, I'm just trying to find some CDs that feature these Latin styles. Can anybody help? I listen mostly to rock, but I really want to check out some Latin music. I figured you guys would be a great resource for recommendations.

Sorry CatBoy. I was just goofin' since all your posts were identical. I wish I could help, but don't listen to much latin stuff. Hopefully someone else can put up some suggestions.

Welcome to FDL! Its cool you're trying to learn some latin grooves.

What was suggested to me by people here and drummers here in Minneapolis was "buena vista social club". Really cool sounds and I think all the songs were played off of a kit vs much of the latin stuff they have a wood block player and a cow bell player. Kinda makes it hard to play on a kit without 6 sets of arms

Yeah, Mike M from the freedrumlessons page said the same thing, "Buena Vista Social Club".

Hey I know this is realllyy late to be replying to this but I guess whoever else reads this can hopefully learn from it, but here is the Cascara pattern that my teacher taught me a while ago.
DRUM TABS
|o-oo-o-o|o-o-oo-o|
|1+2+3+4+|1+2+3+4+|

If you really want to work this, you can do it completely with the left/right hand, then substitute in ghost notes with the other hand instead of rests and really accent the Cascara beat. It sounds awesome when used on the ride bell or cowbell and used as a fill.
