Question!

can/are odd time signatures/beats be used through out a whole song? or is it just played in fragments like dream theater songs wherein the time signature changes from time to time?

or simply: is their a song wherein the time sig is purely odd?
i dunno if that was simpler.
or if my question was understandable wacko.gif

You can do both. I have played full songs in 5/4 before and I have played fragmented odd time patterns within a regular 4/4 song. Hope that helps.

Just as a continuation of Jared's post, here's a song that's (almost) entirely played in 5/4.

George Duke with Billy Cobham - Rush Hour

Geez - Billy looks so relaxed on that kit. He's doing amazing stuff and it looks like he could tell you a funny story while he's at it. ohmy.gif

Try to keep your focus on him at 2:20, that is pretty funny. You can actually see him talking to the tone guy for a couple of seconds. laugh.gif

That's a boatload of drums for a jazz guy. And I thought I was verging on blasphemy for thinking about putting a double pedal into my kit. Great vid.

I very nearly peed my pants when Billy Cobham played the initial groove at 0:32...

I guess I still have a lot to learn because I couldn't tell you if it was an odd time or not. How can you tell? Maybe I'm tone deaf. sad.gif

That one was harder for me to try and pick it out. Its got nothing to do with tone, however. Its the feel of the beat and harmony. A waltz is a good, simple example. You can feel the 3 beats per measure (3/4 time).

The song Seven Days from Sting is entirely played in 5/4 (or some said 5/8). Vinnie Colaiuta is really amazing... Groove Master blink.gif
