I just recently watched the video and I spent this weekend practicing the motion on my kit. I had been using something similar and my slave foot picked it up real quick. My primary foot took a bit but I think it was pedal configuration. One thing in the vid that gets me is when you demonstrate the technique your using a shortboard and once you start the drills you switch to a axis longboard. It would of been cool to see a demonstration on the long board as well. I have demon drives, long board configured, and it took me awile to get configuration right for speed and power. Does anybody have any suggestions for the best configuration on a demon drive? Mine is set up pretty well but If someone has a great suggestion I'm willing to try it.

Hey guys and girls

I just recently got my hands on a copy of the Bass Drum Secrets (BDS) Pack. While I was browsing the single pedal workbook I stopped at the first collection of exercises - the 147 Single Pedal Warm-ups, and started thinking of ways I could use this section, besides working on my bass drum independence, control, and speed, since I'm real adamant of stretching a book's content to maximize my learning. So i got a bunch of ideas for approaching this, and that's what I'm sharing here.

Idea #1 - Linear Fills - Hand-to-Foot Combos

I start by taking hand pattern #4. I then pick one of the 147 foot warm ups in the single pedal workbook. Afterwards, I remove notes from the hand pattern that both the foot and hands play at the same time. This originates a linear fill. Now, if you do this for the entire 147 foot patterns you get AT LEAST 147 hand-to-feet combos for fills.

Idea #2 - Linear Grooves

Instead of using hand pattern #4 as a fill on the toms, you use it between the snare drum and hi-hat or ride. Since this hand pattern doesn't have any sticking information on it (R L R L ...etc) you can mess around with that also. Use a single stroke roll between your hands, a double stroke roll, paradiddle...you name it, anything you want. Play around with dynamics, play combinations between hats and ride and just accent on the snare... whatever, just experiment. Just like in Idea #1, you keep the bass drum foot playing one of the 147 patterns, and remove from your hand pattern the notes that coincide with your bass drum foot. BAM!!! Thousands of linear grooves.

Idea #3 - Expanding Grooves on the BDS, RDS, LDS, DS, FDL, and JDS.

There are hundreds of grooves in each of the two workbooks on the BDS. You could use the 147 patterns as hi-hat/ ride patterns. This way, you just pick any groove you have on the workbooks and substitute the original hi-hat/ride pattern taught by Jared by one of the 147 patterns. BAM!! Thousands of new beats. You could also use this same concept with the beats on the RDS, LDS, DS, FDL, and DRS. This is also applicable with the JDS, if you just swing the 147 patterns.

You could also use these 147 patterns as snare drum patterns. Instead of substituting the hi-hat patterns taught in the original beats of these systems, you just substitute the snare drums played.

You could also use these 147 patterns as bass drum patterns. Instead of substituting the hi-hat or snare patterns taught in the original beats of these systems, you just substitute the bass drums played.

Use them as exercises for playing with your hi-hat foot, while going through beats from the other systems. For instance, taking the beats on the beginner workbook of the RDS, play them on the ride instead of the hi-hat, and then go through all 147 patterns with your hi-hat foot. You can do this as well with the beats on the single pedal workbook on the BDS.

Use these 147 patterns as comping exercises for jazz drumming, by swinging them.

Idea #4 - Expanding Your Library of Fills

These 147 patterns are rhythmical patterns. You could use them as a blueprint for new fills. You first learn the rhythm on the snare drum. Then keep playing the rhythms but moving each stroke around the drum set. You can also use other rudiments instead of just using a single stroke roll.

These are just a few ideas for you to think about. Hope this gets your creative juices flowing.

Have fun guys, I know I am wink.gif.

Great ideas but as I am struggling my way through the Bass Drum (single) exercises in the "conventional" method, it may be some years before I get around to doing any of this!

Hey guys

Ugoliant, I know that the pack was initially sold without the books. They were added to the DVD afterwards. I don't know exactly when that was done though. In any case maybe it's best if you talk to the guys at RRM.

Glad you liked it Tama wink.gif.

You can actually use these ideas even if you're just going through the warm ups with your bass drum pedal, and haven' already mastered them.

Imagine besides working on your single bass pedal independence and control, you want to work on some hand-to-feet combos; or you want to use the jazz beats on the single pedal workbook to work on your comping; or you want to learn different ride/hi-hat patterns with the rock beats Jared wrote in the single pedal workbook, etc... You can use the 147 exercises for all of that.

Basically, the ideas behind these exercises that I wrote are to create a full practice schedule on the drum set, if you only have the BDS pack and the FDL site to work from. More bang for you buck I would say wink.gif. I'm fortunate enough to have lots of different packs from RRM, but I know some of you may not. So besides stretching the material on the BDS and FDL books for my own practice, you guys can take some of these ideas create your own, and learn TONS of stuff from just one pack.

I even use these 147 patterns with songs I learn. For instance, I have a rock song I learned recently where I ride the crash a lot, so my left foot is there doing nothing. I grab the single pedal workbook, turn on the metronome and just work on my left foot independence using a beat I already know how to play, and that I learned from that rock song. When I eventually get good at it, my rock left foot independence will shoot up.

I'm loving this pack smile.gif. Good luck guys.

The trouble is that you've now got hundreds of exercises to get through, although it will do you good in the long run. unsure.gif
