I have always used two hands to choke the cymbals...It's great that there is another method.

Yeah, you just have to be careful with the one-handed crash/choke. Practice it slowly at first, cause there is a risk of hurting yourself when you go to quickly grab the moving cymbal.

Jared,
The demo you do at the end of the lesson is pretty insane. I want to give it a try but suspect that I will fall off of my throne.

Once you have the basic crash/grab down it actually is quite easy. Just make sure you learn it with both hands before trying anything crazy. I used to cut my hands up sooo bad!

Not on most, since the whole principal of choking a cymbal is to stop it from vibrating (which is how a normal cymbal creates sound). Electronic kits create the sound electronically, so there's no way of modifying it. What I did do once was change my hi-hat pad to a crash, and I choked it with the hi-hat pedal. Of course, I'd still grab it for the whole show thing, even if it wasn't necessary. It was more of a way of messing with my guitar player, who could not figure out how I was choking it. biggrin.gif

Note: I have seen a couple of electronic cymbals that can be choked, but only because they have that special feature (i.e. Hart ECymbals). Most kits can't be choked.

By the way, even if the sound of your electric kit doesn't get choked, you should still practice it as if it did. Whenever you go onto an acoustic, you'll have the movement down and you'll be able to do it quite easily.

if you get a roland kit odds are realy good that you can choke the symbols.
i have a $1000 roland kit that i got about 2 years ago and the cymbols are chokeable.

i almost got a yamaha that was more expencive and it didn't have choke-able cymbols.

I can choke the cymbal on my Yamaha DTX II kit - several years old. They used to be about $1K new and about $500 now used.

Are you standing close to the edge? Look out to the setting sun, the brink of your vision. Eternal youth is a landscape of a lie. The cracks in my skin can prove, as the years will testify. Say your prayers and light a fire, we're gonna start a war. Your slogan's a gun for hire, it's what we waited for. This is why we're on the edge. The fight of our lives been drawn to this undying love.

I just wondered why the term 'cymbal choking' is used, instead of something like 'cymbal muting' or 'cymbal damping'. Just a thought.

I would have to say that it is because it is the only time anybody can choke something without getting arrested. wink.gif

That is true, but then you could also say 'you mute or you dampen it's sound' cool.gif
